With some cool ease Le Charmant Rouge’s debut addresses the eternal metric click that often resides in the best moments in the „rock deconstruction“ tradition starting with Faust, Can, This Heat, Eno etc. and running through Pluramon, Tortoise, Notwist etc. The album exposes boldly the bright sharp edges too often pulled off rock – for fear it might scratch someone – and places them on a taught symmetric framework that in the best moments sound like a well oiled helicopter swinging Dick Dale from a hook over a podium in the future where the Meters are jamming with Alan Vega. A sound found only in the higher classes of a genre named „post-rock“ which may now sound as if the Rock itself was such a shocking and terrifying event as to require some kind of recovery process.

Le Charmant Rouge have no such fear or in trepidation to transfigure the flavors of 60s full-tilt psychedelia guitar tremolo – snappy circular groove agitation. And, like the Faust approach – less to write songs as to write them with a razor blade, in this case the mouse. One piece culminates in a highly detailed montage involving backwards tapes and glistening acoustic guitars that made me think gravity may just be a formality we could live without or at least trade for another force which might be more like an echoplex in design.

At other times, ladies and gentlemen, they float in a space next to the first spiritualized album and not so far off the planet where the Slint ship crashed. And if that‘s near your house, then check this out.
